From the Neolithic period to the Roman era, Türkiye has been home to many different civilizations throughout the ages that left their marks on Anatolian lands. A reflection of these varied cultures can be seen at Türkiye's many museums. Among the many priceless artifacts displayed, the ancient sarcophagi are generally the highlights of many of these museums.

A sarcophagus is a funeral receptacle carved out of stone and displayed above the ground. So why are they so interesting to us today? In Ancient Rome, these sarcophagi made of marble and limestone had exquisite reliefs depicting incredibly detailed scenes from history, mythology and daily life. They were expensive to produce, and were thus used by the elite members of society. Today, we can appreciate them as works of art.
