“..I'm Blegen from the excavation of Troy” Exhibition

Çanakkale
31.08.2024 - 8.09.2024

Born in 1887 in the United States while Schliemann was excavating Troy, Carl William Blegen died at the age of 84 in Athens, where he had worked for many years. Blegen, who received his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota (1904) and his master's degree from Yale University (1907), directed many archaeological excavations in the Aegean region. Especially the Troy excavations between 1932 and 38 are known as the most modern excavations of the period in every respect. His discoveries in the Troy VI-VII layers, dated to the Late Bronze Age of Troy and attributed to Homer's Trojan War, revolutionized Homeric archaeology. Blegen, who was able to carry out his work in Troy with the permission granted by Atatürk, met with F. Bacon, the son-in-law of the Calvert family in Çanakkale, and received great help from him, especially for the technical infrastructure of the excavation. The results of the Troy excavations in 8 volumes published by Blegen in the early 1950s are still the most important reference source for Aegean Archaeology.

This exhibition aims to provide a retrospective view of the 7 seasons of excavations on the 90th anniversary of the Carl Blegen Excavations that began in 1932. The stories of the scientists, curious visitors, workers, excavation commissioners and masons who came together to unravel the secrets of the city of Troy, the ruin of ruins, are tried to be told to the visitor.

This exhibition can be seen at The ancient Site of Troy can be visited free of charge between August 31 - September 08, 2024 between 10:00 - 22:00.
