NECMİ İĞE HOUSE ETHNOGRAPHY MUSEUM

This mansion, which is the oldest example of çivil architecture in Edirne, is an 18th century structure and is located next to the Sarı Mosque in Meydan district, Mimar Sinan street. The mansion was used by Mister Emin who was Edirne Treasurer (Defterdar) and his family in Edirne. After being empty for a while, Necmi İğe and his family moved to this mansion.

This mansion which used as museum today has an area of approximately 900 square meters and it is an extremely important building for Edirne Ethnography in terms of its architectural history, the usage of material, plan formation and reflecting the lifestyle of the period. The mansion was built in the form of a haremlik and selamlık, with a ground floor, a mezzanine and an upper floor. This building, which has 7 rooms and 6 benches, contains the traces of our cultural and traditional values.

Every corner of Necmi İğe House Ethnography Museum contains clues about the Daily life of that period. In the museum, the details of wedding ceremony, handcrafts, customs and traditions of our region are explained. Customs such as asking ceremony for a girl to marry, dowry room,henna night, groom's shave, imam wedding, casting of lead, the wedding dinner, the Turkish bath and the bridal bath have been revived. Local clothes belonging to Rumelia and Balkans are exhibited.

The museum aims to transfer the living culture, social life, traditions and customs of our region to future generations

The Founders of Edirne Museum: Necmi İğe

Necmi İğe was born in 1898 in İğcioğlu Ahmet Ağa Mansion,in the vicinity of Muradiye slope in the Küçükpazar district of Edirne.

In 1922, they moved to the mansion which was located next to the Sarı Mosque on Mimar Sinan Street. This mansion was owned by Edirne Treasurer Emin Bey, the İğe brother of his mother Adviye Hanım. Necmi lived in this mansion until his death. This mansion is known as the house of Necmi İğe today. Even though he was registered as Ahmed Necmeddin in the state register, the peoples of Edirne called him as ‘Necmi Ağabey’(brother), except for official correspondance until his death.

The father of orphans, ‘Necmi Brother’of the peoples of Edirne passed away on 8 December 1953, at the age of 55 because of a heart attack.
