The ruins of the İznik Lake Basilica were discovered in early 2014 during aerial photography as part of the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality's "Historical Cultural Heritage Assessment and Aerial Photography Studies." This is the first time the site has been captured in its entirety by aerial photography.
The structure generally reflects the architecture of an Early Christian basilica. Underwater surveys also revealed debris from the structure within and around the basilica, which was formed as a result of the collapse. Following surface surveys initiated in the summer of 2015, underwater excavations began in November 2015 under the direction of the Museum Directorate and the scientific supervision of Prof. Dr. Mustafa ŞAHİN. Subsequently, by decision of the Council of Ministers, the site continues under the direction of Prof. Dr. Mustafa ŞAHİN, Head of the Archaeology Department at Uludağ University.
Work on the Basilica Archaeological Site Welcome Center was completed by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums in May 2025. The welcome center includes a museum, cafeteria, retail store, and a walking platform. Iznik Lake Basilica Archaeological Site Museum was opened to visitors on October 28, 2025.
